Nathan Prisk, Falmouth Exeter Plus

Biography

Nathan began working in IT in the '80s as a business systems programmer. He went on to specialise in Networking via Novel and Windows servers. He joined Falmouth University as Deputy IT Manager in 1996 on the back of a project to connect Apple Macs to windows servers. He first big project came with the LAN/MAN bids in 1997/8 after which he was promoted to Head of IT. In 2001 a decision to purchase the Cisco phone system Call Manager lead Falmouth to become part of the Janet voice advisory group specialising in VoIP on campus networks. In 2004 the Combined Universities in Cornwall bid was successful which saw the University of Exeter joining Falmouth on a shared campus and shared infrastructure and it is this experience that Nathan will be discussing at Networkshop. He is a proud Cornishman and loves motorsport

Abstract

Universities sharing an IT service, the ups and downs

In 2004 The University of Exeter and Falmouth University chose to set up a shared campus. A wholly owned shared services company to deliver IT, library services and student services was set up to assist with this challenge, whilst also delivering more traditional shared or outsourced services such as catering, caretaking and estates. This talk aims to report on the past challenges associated with shared services and discuss how technology either aided or disadvantaged these, and to finish a brief look into the future to discuss the potential challenges and developments ahead
